Naturally, religious types are none-to-pleased with the Atheist display, which reads:
At this season of the winter solstice, may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.
The article, of course, would not be complete without some quotes from local embarassment, caniphile and all-around asshole John Ahern on the topic.
Ahern said religion is under attack in popular society, and all major religions should be free to have a display in the Statehouse.
"We are a Judeo-Christian nation, and we need to honor the different times of year for Christians, Jews and even Muslims," he said.
Nice of Ahern to throw "even Muslims" a bone there. And again with the poor, oppressed Christian schtick. Boy, is there anyone more oppressed then poor old John Ahern? He continues babbling:
Christmas trees, menorahs and displays for Ramadan should all be welcomed, Ahern said. But the atheist sign, he said, is a step too far.
"This is bizarre," he said. "Atheism is not a religion. It doesn't belong there. And I would definitely not want to see Satanism up there at all."
Uh... what? Why is it that half the shit that comes out of this man's mouth makes absolutely no sense? Has he been screened for dementia?
Frankly, I might not really care all that much if there was an atheist display in the Capitol or not. I mean, Christmas is a secular, commercial holiday and has been for decades. That's not changing anytime soon.
But to see how the display brings such annoyance to John Ahern does warm my cold, godless heart just a bit.
So, to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, I say: Thanks!
And to John Ahern, I say: Get help, now!
